You’ve probably heard the conventional wisdom about scaling a service business:
Hire a team. Get an office. Work 60+ hours a week. Accept lower profit margins as you grow.
We decided to ignore all of that. 🙃
Instead, we’ve built Content Bistro into a $600K/year business with just the two of us plus specialized contractors – no full-time employees, no fancy office, and (this is our favorite part!) working just 20 hours each per week.
Oh, and we maintain a 45-47% profit margin while doing it. 🙌🏼
If you’re wondering how that’s possible, you’re in the right place.
Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on our business model and sharing exactly how we’ve created what we call an “intentionally profitable” business.
Our Unconventional Business Structure (That Actually Works!)
When most people think about scaling a service business, they immediately jump to the agency model – hiring full-time employees, taking on more clients, and accepting that profit margins will shrink as overhead grows.
We took a different approach. 💯
Our business breaks down into three core revenue streams:
📝Copywriting Services (50-60%): High-value, strategy-led copywriting for businesses across various industries
🤝🏽Consulting/Coaching (20%): Strategic consulting and coaching for founders and creative entrepreneurs
👩🏼🏫Our Signature Program (28-30%): Currently that’s Ready to Sell, our comprehensive strategy-first copywriting program
This hybrid model gives us incredible stability while keeping things interesting.
A typical week for us includes a mix of client writing, consulting calls, and program support – the perfect blend to prevent burnout and keep us engaged.
But the real magic isn’t in what we do – it’s in HOW we do it.

The Contractor Model: How We Deliver $400K in Copywriting Services Without Burning Out
One question we get all the time is: “How can you possibly deliver that much copywriting with just the two of you?”
The answer is simple but powerful: a small team of specialized contractors and a meticulously refined process.
Our Team Structure
Instead of hiring full-time employees, we work with specialized contractors who are experts in their specific areas:
Research Specialist: Conducts customer interviews, analyzes survey data, and mines testimonials. We’ve worked with Natasha Blimkie extensively and highly recommend her for this.
Editor: Ensures every document that goes to clients is polished and professional. Gillian Hill is the exceptional editor behind all our copy.
Designer: Creates wireframes and visual assets for our copy. Salma has been designing our wireframes for the longest time ever.
VA: Handles administrative tasks and client support.
Course Concierge: Manages our program and supports our students. Jenn on our team is currently doubling as both our VA and Course Concierge.
Tech Team: Keeps our website and systems running smoothly. Jenn McGroary is our tech wizard.
Accountant: Manages our finances and tax planning. We have a local-to-us accounting firm that we’ve worked with since the very beginning.
What makes this model work is that we’re not trying to find the cheapest help – we’re investing in high-quality professionals who deliver exceptional work.
Our Process: The Secret to Scaling Without Sacrificing Quality
The real key to our ability to deliver high-value, strategy-rich copywriting at scale is our process. We’ve spent years refining our approach, breaking it down into five key phases:
Client Onboarding: Getting to know the client, their brand, voice, and objectives
Research: Split across three sub-phases to gather comprehensive insights
Writing: The actual creation of copy assets
Editing: Professional polishing by our dedicated editor
Client Approval: Final review and implementation
We’ve created a system that allows us to hit the ground running when it’s time to write by optimizing each phase, particularly the research process.
This means we can deliver exceptional copy consistently without working ourselves to death.
How We Generate Leads Without Paid Ads or a Sales Team
How do we attract clients without a sales team or a massive ad budget?
Our lead generation strategy is refreshingly straightforward:
Referrals: Our number one source of new business comes from happy clients telling others about us. It’s a privilege for sure!
Podcast Appearances and Guest Trainings: Sharing our expertise on right-fit podcasts and group programs that our clients are in consistently brings in qualified leads. AND we share an unfiltered, tell-all approach to increasing sales and writing copy. That’s one reason so many events and podcasts invite us back! Book us for your podcast or program!
Content Marketing: Our blog (yep, this very one), email list, and social media presence (particularly Instagram) round out our lead generation strategy
The key to making this work is delivering an exceptional client experience from start to finish.
When clients get amazing results, they naturally want to tell others about it.
Take a peek at our testimonials page to see what we mean!
For example, when we helped Vanessa Lau with her program launch that generated over $1 million, she recorded a YouTube video for her channel (with millions of subscribers) talking about how working with us was a huge part of that success.
We didn’t ask her to do that – she did it because the experience and results were worth sharing.

From Cold Pitching to Premium Clients: Our Journey
Full disclosure: We didn’t start with high-paying clients and a refined business model. Like most service providers, we started at the bottom.
Back in 2011-2012, we were sending out about 40 pitches per month to potential clients. It took about 60 pitches before we landed our first real client for ongoing social media management services.
Our early pitches were simple but personalized. We would:
Research the business to understand their needs
Identify specific gaps in their marketing
Offer 2-3 tactical suggestions they could implement
Invite them to discuss how we could help further
This approach worked because it demonstrated value upfront rather than just talking about ourselves.
As we gained experience and refined our skills, we gradually moved upmarket, increased our rates, and became more selective about the clients we worked with.
The Husband-Wife Dynamic: How We Balance Work and Life

Working together as a married couple comes with unique challenges and benefits. Over our 14+ years (as of writing this post) in business together, we’ve developed some clear boundaries to keep our relationship healthy:
Complementary Roles: Mayank focuses on data analysis, process improvements, and business growth strategy, while Prerna excels at strategic thinking, copywriting and client delivery. BOTH work together on sales strategies for the business and for clients.
Firm Shutdown Time: We wrap up work when our daughter comes home from school (around 4:30 PM), and once work is done, it’s done. We don’t check emails constantly or scroll through business social media accounts endlessly.
No Weekend Work: We keep weekends work-free to recharge and focus on family.
Regular Travel: We take short and long trips every 90-120 days after completing a work “sprint” to rest and reconnect.
Non-Work Hobbies: We’ve intentionally developed interests outside work, like sports, reading and other activities.
Confession: These boundaries weren’t always in place. In fact, work and personal life were waaaay more blended in the early days. But as we’ve grown, we’ve become more intentional about creating a clear separation between work and home.
Our “Why”: Building an Intentionally Profitable Life
When we first started our business, our “why” was simple: make money. 🤷🏻♀️
Mayank had been on bed rest for a year due to health issues, we had medical bills piling up, and we had a young daughter to support.
But as our business has evolved, so has our purpose.
Today, our “why” centers around building what we call an “intentionally profitable life” – a life where profit isn’t just measured in dollars but in time freedom, meaningful work, and the ability to create core memories together.
For us, profitability means:
Being able to work just 20-30 hours a week
Taking regular vacations, laptop-free
Being present for our daughter
Working with perfect-fit clients
Doing work that lights us up
This shift from “make money to survive” to “build a life, not just a business” has been the most rewarding part of our journey.
Key Lessons from Our Journey
If we were to distill our experience into a few key takeaways, they would be:
Process Optimization Trumps Pricing: While raising your rates is important, optimizing your process is what truly allows you to scale without burning out.
Client Experience Is Everything: Exceptional client experiences lead to referrals, testimonials, and long-term relationships – the foundation of sustainable growth.
Hire for Quality, Not Price: Working with skilled contractors who deliver excellent work is worth the investment, even if it means a smaller markup.
Be Intentional About Growth: Not all growth is good growth. We’ve been very deliberate about how and when we expand, always keeping our quality of life in mind.
Regular Debriefs Are Essential: After every project, we ask ourselves: What did we love? What could be better? Where were the process breakdowns? This continuous improvement mindset has been crucial to our evolution.
