I started writing online in 2008.

As a mom to a 9-month-old, writing online was my creative outlet.

An outlet that helped me connect with other writers, like-minded creatives, my fellow new mamas.

Writing, over the years, has been both therapeutic and, honestly, wildly profitable for us too.

How many people can honestly, hand-on-heart, say that the work they’re doing is the work they’d do even if they weren’t paid for it?

I can.

Freelance writing has opened up doors I didn’t even know existed.

Writing copy has helped us create a business that’s made our dream life a reality.

Being a writer is a badge I wear with quiet pride. 🤩

And it’s not a cliche when I tell you that being able to sit at my desk and write words every single day has been a real gift.

At the same time, I’d be playing head-in-the-sand dinosaur if I didn’t look at the state of the world of online writing. *waves hand around*

Specifically, yes, artificial intelligence or GenAI or, more familiarly … Chat GPT and Claude or any of the numerous AI writing tools based on these.

Will AI Replace Copywriters? Is Artificial Intelligence Really The Death Of Online Writing As We Know It?

Short answer: I don’t know. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Longer answer: I don’t see it as the death of online writing.

I do, however, see it as the evolution of online writing.

Let me explain.

Back in the day, when I started writing online … you know what was really popular?

Content mills. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yep.

Yours truly has even written for some of these. In fact, I made some really good friends writing at these “mills.”

Blogging was all the rage and content mills helped provide TONS of articles at inexpensive rates.

Sound familiar?

Yeah.

AI is doing the same right now. 💯

Producing tons of content at a fraction of the price.

However, even then, average articles and copy sank to the bottom of the pile.

Today, too, copy that lacks depth, nuance, context can’t find a foothold in our customers’ minds and hearts.

So, yes, AI will change how content and copy are created.

BUT

What’ll stay the same is your audience’s desire to connect.

Their desire to feel seen and heard by your content stays the same.

There’s a reason raw, unfiltered, unedited video content is doing way better than polished, ultra-edited content on social media.

Case in point: The whole “I’m demure, I’m mindful” trend over on TikTok last year.

It resonated because it was different.

It spread wildly because it was so real.

It became a trend because it wasn’t trendy to begin with.

All of this to say, as a copywriter and more importantly, an entrepreneur, you may want to familiarize yourself with AI tools and workflows so you can stay relevant.

What you don’t need to do is outsource your thinking to it.

You don’t need to give it complete creative control.

Because guess who’s going out there in the real world, having conversations with other humans, paying attention to how people are buying?

Yep.

YOU.💯

Last I checked … People are still buying from people.

Also?

AI may do the writing for you.

But can it infuse your copy, your content with rawness, brilliance, spice, story, tug-at-your-heartstrings depth?  

No.

Maybe with a ton of prompting. But then, isn’t it faster if you just write it yourself? 😆

And here’s the thing …

… it’s NOT the use of excessive emojis or the poor em dash that gives content away as AI-generated …

…. It’s not even the use of all those words and phrases you see being pounded on as being AI giveaways …

… it’s the LACK of that certain je ne sais quoi factor that screams bland and boring.

That je ne sais quoi is what makes your copy rise above all the average AI-generated glut out there.

Long story short:

AI will change how copy and content are created.

That’s why I added monthly AI Office Hours and also AI-focused lessons to every module in Ready-to-Sell.

HOWEVER

You still need to own your voice, your POV, your positioning.

You still need to know WHAT makes buyers buy and humans tick.

You still need to master the principles of not only great copy but ALSO solid strategy.

So, then … how am I using AI to speed up our workflows?

How AI is Changing Copywriting Workflows for Copywriters

Here’s a high-level overview:

Accelerate the Sales Process

While copy packages are definitely our most popular way of selling our services, custom proposals are a big part of our sales process.

Earlier, the process would look something like this

Sales Call Booked >> Wait for Transcript or Furiously Make Notes >> Analyze or review Call Notes or Transcript for Custom Offer>> Create Proposal >> Book Proposal Walkthrough Call >> Share Proposal on Call>> Customize or Sign off

Right now, it looks a lot like this.

Sales Call >> Read.AI Transcript in Minutes>> ChatGPT Analyzes Transcript>> Create Proposal>> Present Proposal Using Loom>> Customize or Sign-Off

Not only have we reduced our calls to a single call, but streamlining this process has made sending $50K-$100K project proposals a breeze.

This one workflow alone has sliced our time on proposals by a whopping 60%.

Speed Up Data-Based Research

I’m a big fan of using data in my copy. And earlier this involved a whole lot of Googling and going down several interesting but time-consuming rabbit holes.

Now?

Perplexity.ai to the rescue.

Perplexity spits out stats and studies in seconds, and because it links to them as well, I can verify it and not worry about AI hallucinations.

You can also use AI to do competitive analysis including SEO and messaging analysis.

Create Variations for Split Testing

Once you’ve written your emails or sales pages, you can always use ChatGPT to come up with variations for split testing.

Word of warning, though: ALWAYS run your AI-generated copy through a plagiarism checker.

I cannot tell you how many cases I’ve seen of well-known names being called out because they’ve simply taken a framework or a copy asset that AI gave them and ran with it.

Use It To Poke Holes In Your Ideas

If, like me, you nerd out over different approaches to solving a problem, ChatGPT can be a good sparring partner.

Share your approach or idea and ask it to find holes in it. You’ll often be surprised at what it may find, and it can give you a lot of different directions to explore as well.

The Real Secret to Using ChatGPT Effectively

Whether you use ChatGPT, Claude, or any of the other LLM (Large Language Model) tools, like Jasper, WriteSonic, etc … you need to ALWAYS remember it’s still a “garbage in, garbage out” model.

The results you get are as good as the instructions (or prompts) you give.

And it doesn’t end there.

You still need to analyze the results to see whether or not they’re actually good AND safe to use.

(I mean, when I was writing this post, my Grammarly AI kept suggesting I correct “copy” to “copies.” 🤦🏻‍♀️Yeah!)

You need to know how to optimize an offer.

You need to know what makes an opt-in page actually convert.

You need to know whether zero-funnel sales strategies will work for a course.

At the end of the day, my friend …

You still need to be the thinker, the strategist, the creative.

You now have an ally, an aide, an incredibly speedy assistant.

BUT

Your real job is no different from what it was — sell to the right people.

Because whether you’re selling courses, coaching, or content …

You’re in the business of sales.

You’re in the business of education.

You’re in the business of creating impact and building a legacy.

That business isn’t changing anytime soon.

AI can help you a LOT. No lie.

But ONLY if you know whether or not that help is actually any good.

Like I said at the beginning of this post …

Creating a glut of content that’s average, bland, and boring has been done not only by AI but also by humans for years.

That’s not the win. ❌

The win is to safely use this technology (should we choose to) to create white space, build better offers, and optimize our sales experience.

A: While AI can assist with writing, it cannot fully replace the creativity, strategy, and human connection that copywriters bring to their craft.

Q: How can copywriters stay relevant with AI?

A: By mastering persuasion, psychology, and strategy, and using AI as a tool to complement rather than replace their work. THIS will be a great place for you to start.
